Acer Chromebook 14

Winner: Best Laptops for Writers (Best Value)
Intel Celeron N3160 Quad Core – 4GB Ram – 32GB SSD – 14″ FHD Anti-Glare

Acer’s 14” Chromebook is a wonderfully affordable laptop. It weighs in at around 4lbs. Neither light as air nor overly burdensome. It’s an excellent option for writers on a budget.

This Chromebook’s 14” anti-glare display supports a full 1080p resolution, so you’ll get crisp, beautiful HD. The biggest downside to this laptop is its internal memory is only 32GB.

This would be a problem for someone working with large files, but text files are very compact, so you’ll be able to keep a ton of writing even in that small space. Plus if you write in something like Google Docs everything is stored externally, and it’s not even an issue at all.

ASUS Series K

Best Laptop for Writers (Top 12)
Intel Core i7 Quad-Core – 16GB Ram – 256GB SSD – 15.6″ Full HD Anti-Glare

The ASUS Series K is a really nice basic laptop. It has a great balance of utility and value. This laptop will serve you well, whether you’re hard at work writing, or just browsing the internet.

The Series K is a mid-sized laptop. It has a full HD 15.6” display, so you have a screen that’s a good size. But it’s also not so big and bulky that it hinders its portability.

It weighs under 5.5lbs. It’s not extraordinarily light, but it’s definitely not too heavy, either. It does a great job with balancing portability and display size.

The hardware of the Series K is actually great for the price point. It has a sixth generation Intel i7 CPU which can reach processing speeds up to 3.5GHz. Plus, it comes with 16GB of RAM right out of the box! So already you’re looking at a fast computer.

On top of that, it has a 256GB SSD. With an SSD you’ll get faster start up, faster file and application loading, and just in general a very speedy computer.

This laptop is fast, so it’s great for general use. Web browsing, email, Netflix, all the basics are covered. You’ll easily be able to run pretty much any program.

It can also handle most games. With an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M graphics card, you’ll be able to play most games on medium settings.

For ports and other features, the Series K has a good spread. It has one USB 2.0 port and two USB 3.0 ports.

Plus it has a LAN port if you ever need wired internet (it’s a great help with large downloads). It also have both VGA (D-sub) and HDMI ports. Of course, it has your standard 2-in-1 headphone/mic jack. And it has a nice little webcam.

The ASUS Series K is a great laptop. It’s overall very fast, and can still play many games. It’s not so big that it loses portability, but also not so small that it affects productivity. For a nice laptop at a good price, the ASUS Series K brings a lot to the table.

Dell Inspiron 17

Best Laptop for Writers (Top 12)
8th Gen Intel Core i5 – 8GB Ram – 1TB HDD – 17.3″ HD Plus LED

Dell’s Inspiron 17 laptop is a nice laptop for the price. It has a beautiful platinum silver chassis. It also has a large 17.3” HD LED anti-glare display.

Of course, because it is such a large display, the laptop is a little heavier. It weighs just over 6lbs. The large size does make it a little less portable, so you’ll have to decide if you want more screen to work with, or something smaller you can take with you more easily.

On the other hand, the larger size also means they were able to fit a full backlit keyboard, with number pad. That’s a great feature.

This Inspiron 17 has some good hardware in it. It has an eighth generation Intel i5 CPU. It can reach processing speeds of up to 3.4GHz. Not bad at all! It also comes with 8GB of DDR4 RAM, but is upgradeable up to 16GB DDR4.

This is an easy, affordable upgrade (basically plug and play, it’s literally that easy). We always recommend going for the RAM upgrade if you can.

It’s an easy, affordable way to give your laptop a speed boost. It also comes with a 1TB HDD. That’s a ton of space! You’ll have room for everything on here.

The only hardware that’s a bit of a letdown is the integrated graphics card. This will really only affect you if you want to play new, graphically intense games. For things like video streaming you’ll have a crisp, lovely image.

Unlike a lot of laptops these days, this trusty machine actually comes with an optical drive. That means you’ll be able to read and write CDs and DVDs.

If that’s a feature you’re really set on, this might be a good option. It has three USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. Plus, it has an HDMI port and LAN port.

Both of which are very useful. It also has your standard headphone/mic combo jack, and an SD card reader.

Overall, this laptop has a lot going for it. It has a great, sizeable screen so you have more room to work with. However, it’s also very large because of this. It has tons of storage space, and a good processor. With a slight RAM upgrade you will get the most out of the laptop. The anti-glare display makes it great in any environment, perfect for writers.

Best Laptops for Writers (Top 12)
7th Gen Intel Core i7 – 12GB Ram – 256GB SDD – 15.6″ Full HD Touch 2-in-1 Convertible

Acer’s Aspire R 2-in-1 convertible laptop is not only a great laptop for writers, it’s a great laptop in general. It was also selected in our Top 12 Laptops with SSD article.

It’s not too big or too small with its 15.6” full HD touchscreen display. The size also allows for a full keyboard with number pad. We love a laptop with a number pad.

And it should definitely be mentioned that the keyboard is backlit, which is practically essential for writers.

The Aspire R has some nice components. It has a seventh generation Intel i7 CPU that processes at up to 3.5GHz. It has 12GB of RAM, which is slightly odd, but a good amount.

The RAM cannot be upgraded, though. As we mentioned, it does have an SSD which will mean fast loading and boot times for you.

The 256GB SSD might not seem like a ton of space, but it’s going to be plenty unless you have a hoard of gigantic files like movies or something.

The dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 940MX will let you enjoy plenty of touch games in tablet mode.

For connectivity and other features, the Aspire R has everything you’ll need. It has one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 ports, and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. Plus, it has an SD card reader, which is nice. And it has an HDMI port, plus your standard 2-in-1 headphone/mic combo jack.

To top it off, this laptop offers both a webcam and a fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader is great for an extra layer of security.

While many writers opt to use the keyboard, the great thing about this laptop is you can get a pen and hand write directly on the touchscreen.

There are definitely many writers who prefer to hand write, and with this laptop you’ll be able to keep your handwritten notes easily in a convenient digital format.

The Aspire 15 by Acer is a very versatile and fun convertible laptop. It offers something for every kind of writer. Whether you’re deep in Word or prefer to write by hand this laptop will help you tell your story.

Lenovo Flex 5

Best Laptop for Writers (Top 12)
8th Gen Intel Core i5 – 8GB Ram – 256GB SDD – 15.6″ FHD IPS Touchscreen

Lenovo’s Flex 5 is a great 2-in-1 convertible tablet and laptop. We also highlighted it in our Top 12 Laptops with SSD article. This Onyx Black laptop looks stunning.

It has a beautiful 15.6” full HD touchscreen display. It’s a little heavy at just over 7lbs, but still compact enough to be fairly portable.

The Lenovo Flex 5 doesn’t have cutting edge, high end components. For the price point, however, you’re getting a good laptop. It has an eighth generation Intel i5 CPU and 8GB of RAM. It’s not lightning fast, but it won’t keep you waiting, either.

The integrated graphics card will work great for touch tablet games and streaming video, but don’t expect to play any graphically intensive games on this machine.

This laptop has a lot of utility for the general user, and for writers. The ability to have both a laptop and tablet really opens up a lot of possibilities.

For the general user you have everything you need, and then some! It’s so fun and easy to get creative with the touchscreen.

For writers you can write by hand right on the screen, if that’s your style. Or use it as a laptop and write with the keyboard. You can even type up your main text and write notes in the margins by hand!

Other features of this laptop include the back-lit keyboard. That’s something a writer can hardly live without. It also has a built-in webcam.

It has an SD card reader as well, which can be nice. Plus it has an HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 3.1 Type-C port, and your standard headphone/mic combo jack.

All in all, there’s really a lot you can do with this laptop. Being able to mix typed and written word is amazing.

Acer Aspire E

Best Laptop for Writers (Top 12)
8th Gen Intel Core i5 – 8GB Ram – 256GB SDD – 15.6″ FHD IPS

The Acer Aspire E15 is a really great laptop. It was also our Best Value pick for Top 12 SSD Laptops! The brushed metal chassis is stylish and classy.

It’s not too big with its 15.6” full HD display. It’s about average weight, a little over 5lbs, so not too heavy, either. A good balance of screen size and portability.

The Aspire E15 has a wonderful backlit full keyboard, number pad and all. The backlit keys are something any writer should prioritize for their laptop. It also has a really nice trackpad. It’s smooth and responsive. Honestly it feels quite nice to use.

With a eighth generation Intel i5 CPU that processes at speeds up to 3.4GHz and 8GB of RAM you’ll enjoy a fast laptop out of the box. Although it does have a dedicated graphic card, it certainly won’t hold up for much gaming.

However, with the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 you’ll still get a stunning 1080p image when streaming video. And of course the 256GB SSD will give you that much more speed when opening up those giant manuscript files.

The Aspire E15 has one USB 2.0 port, two USB 3.0 port, and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. It also has HDMI, VGA, and ethernet ports. Plus it has the standard headphone/mic combo jack you would expect.

Overall the Acer Aspire E15 is a great budget laptop. It has good hardware and lots of features. They keyboard is lovely. If you want a nice laptop for writing and general use purposes, and want good value for your money this is a great choice.

HP Stream 14

Best Laptop for Writers (Top 12)
Intel Celeron N3060 – 4GB Ram – 32GB eMMC – 14″ Bright View HD Crisp

If you’re the kind of person who is easily distracted and needs a dedicated writing machine on a budget, you might want to check out HP’s Stream laptop. It has a cool Jet Black chassis.

It’s on the smaller side of laptops, with a 14” display, and is fairly lightweight, weighing under 4 lbs. Quite a portable laptop, but compact and light.

The hardware components are on the lower end, but don’t let that dissuade you just yet. It has an Intel Celeron N3060 CPU which can reach speeds of up to 2.48GHz.

It has 4GB of RAM, and 32GB eMMC storage. It doesn’t have a lot of space, and it’s not zippy, but it won’t drag if you’re only working with text files.

While those specs might seem like a disadvantage, they do guarantee you a shockingly low price point. Besides that, it means there’s less this laptop can do, which means less ways you can be distracted when you’re trying to write.

This is a great laptop to consider as a supplemental device and dedicated writing machine. There’s not a lot of storage, but text files don’t take up much space anyway, so you really don’t need too much storage.

If you want a few extra features, this laptop does have some. It has a webcam, and SD card reader, which can both be very nice.

It also has one USB 2.0 port and two USB 3.0 ports. Plus an HDMI port, and your basic headphone/mic combo jack. The touch pad also supports multi-gesture, which is nice.

If you’ve found yourself easily distracted by social media, streaming video, or anything else on your current computer, and want to get more writing done, consider the HP Stream.

It’s all business, no distractions, and at a crazy low price point. You’ll find focus a lot easier to maintain with this laptop.

Dell Inspirion 15

Best Laptop for Writer (Top 12)
7th Gen Intel Core i7 – 8GB Ram – 128GB SDD + 1TB HDD – 15.6″ Full HD

Dell’s Inspiron laptop is a great choice if you want a powerful laptop for more than just writing. For the writer who is also a gamer, but wants a more affordable laptop, this is one to check out. We also loved it in our Top 12 Laptops with SSD article!

With a 15.6” full HD anti-glare display, and full backlit keyboard with number pad, this Inspiron has a lot going for it.

It’s about average weight, at around 5.5lbs, so it’s not too heavy. It’s pretty good for portability because it’s not too big for a backpack, but still has a great display size.

The hardware is what really makes this laptop stand out compared to our other options. For just writing you really don’t need much.

But there’s more to a writer than just writing. Sometimes you need to relax, and for many gaming is their first choice for time off. This Inspiron has a seventh generation Intel i7 CPU that can reach processing speeds of up to 3.8GHz.

That’s really fast! It also comes with 8GB of RAM. It supports up to 32GB RAM, and we recommend upgrading to at least 16GB.

You might see similar specs on other laptops in this list, but what sets it apart is its graphics card. This Inspiron has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4GB.

This is definitely not the highest end graphics card, but it’s more than enough to play tons of games on high settings, and medium for some.

We would also like to mention the storage. This laptop is great because it has both an SSD and an HDD. The SSD is 128GB, which isn’t a lot.

But if your OS is installed on the SSD you’ll benefit from faster boot times, and be able to quickly load and retrieve files (like those giant manuscripts) and applications stored on the SSD. To supplement the low storage, they also include an HDD.

This is a great place to store your giant collect of games, and anything else you might have. The freedom and versatility to manage your storage is absolutely amazing on this laptop. The best of both worlds for writers and gamers.

Other features of this laptop include three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and built-in SD card reader.

It also has an ethernet port which is great if you need to download huge files or need a stable connection for online gaming. It also has your standard headphone/mic jack, and a webcam.

Basically, if you love to write as much as you love to game, but don’t need a top of the line expensive laptop, this is a great choice. It’s got good hardware, at a very reasonable price. It really is a great balance for writers who love to game.

Apple MacBook Air

Best Laptop for Writer (Top 12)
Intel Dual Core i5 – 8GB Ram – 128GB SDD  – 13.3″ LED Backlit

Apple has really carved out a niche for themselves when it comes to devices for professionals. The fact that they create both the hardware and software for their devices allows them the opportunity for an intimate system optimization that other companies just don’t have.

Their devices are great for professionals in videography, music, graphic design, and of course writers. The Macbook Air is the perfect laptop for a writer to hone their craft.

This 13.3” Macbook Air is one of the lightest, most compact and portable laptops available. It weighs less than 3lbs.

It can fit in any backpack, and some purses, too. It has a sleek, slim design that will look great wherever you’re writing with it.

The hardware is great, too. With a 128GB SSD your Macbook Air will start up, retrieve files, and load applications very quickly.

That may not seem like a ton of space, but it’s enough for writing and general use. The fifth generation Intel i5 CPU can reach processing speeds of up to 2.9GHz, and is supported with 8GB of RAM. The integrated graphics will get you beautiful, crisp video.

The Macbook Air’s other features include two USB 3.0 ports, one Thunderbolt 2 port, and an SD card reader. It also has a headphone jack. Plus it has a built-in webcam and dual mics so you can Skype or Facetime with ease.

ASUS Chromebook Flip

Best Laptop for Writer (Top 12)
Intel Core m5 – 4GB Ram – 64GB Flash  – 12.5″ Full HD Touchscreen

ASUS’s Chromebook Flip is an extremely compact 2-in-1 convertible laptop. It weighs just over 2.5lbs.

This runs smaller than the average “small” size laptop, with a touchscreen display of only 12.5”. The portability it offers is absolutely amazing, but it does have a noticeably smaller display, which might affect productivity.

We absolutely love the feel of the keyboard on this laptop. And we’d be remiss not to mention to the backlit keys, something we consider practically essential for writers. Despite the laptop being so small, the keyboard was still comfortable to use. It didn’t feel too cramped.

The specs on this laptop (and its size), while fine for writing, make it feel like a tablet with a permanently attached keyboard.

It has an Intel Core m5 CPU that can process at up to 2.7GHz. The 64GB flash storage especially feels like tablet specs, but it is very fast. You will probably want to utilize some external storage.

Still very portable, but gives you some extra storage space. It has 4GB of RAM, which will work well for simple computing tasks like writing or tablet apps.

Other noteworthy features of this laptop include its two USB 3.1 Type-C ports. It also has an SD card reader, which is really nice.

You can add some more storage with this easily. The Chromebook Flip also has a webcam and standard audio jack.

The Chromebook Flip is tiny, which makes it probably the best option if you value portability above all else. If you need a larger screen to work with, we have plenty of other options listed for you to check out.

Basically, if you want a tablet device, but also love to write and don’t like the idea of keyboard attachments, the Chromebook Flip is the perfect device for you.
